Waste Management Plan 2025-2035

Latest Developments in the Czech Republic

The Waste Management Plan of the Czech Republic (WMP CR) is the key national policy document guiding waste management development. The Government of the Czech Republic approved the new plan for the period 2025–2035. The plan focuses on waste prevention, increased recycling and a gradual reduction of landfilling, in line with EU legislation and circular economy principles. It provides a binding framework for national, regional and local authorities. The document supports the transition towards more efficient use of resources and sustainable waste management practices.

Overview of the Waste Management Plan

The Waste Management Plan of the Czech Republic is based on the waste hierarchy, prioritising:

1.     Waste prevention – reducing the generation of waste at source.

2.     Preparation for reuse and support for repeated use of materials.

3.     Recycling and material recovery, in line with increasing EU recycling targets.

4.     Reduction of landfilling through the promotion of alternative waste treatment options.

The plan also reflects the need to integrate waste management with the principles of the circular economy, aiming to maximise material use and minimise environmental impacts.

Implementation and monitoring

The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Waste Management Plan. The plan also serves as the basis for regional waste management plans, which must align with national priorities and targets.

It remains to be seen how the new Czech government will approach the Waste Management Plan, which was prepared and approved by the previous administration in the second half of 2025.
